So I feel like I’ve been gone from David Simon’s languorous depiction of New Orleans music and culture for a long time, and took me a while to feel comfortable again in part travelogue, part sprawling ensemble showcase. It was originally slated to premiere close to the American release – which is how the second season was handled – but instead it only finally got out on Friday (compared to Girls getting a very late release last year but whose success ensured that the second season releases have been hot on that show’s heels). Treme’s ratings have been terrible for Sky Atlantic. Forbrydelsen isn’t particularly subtle television, but by and large it knows what it’s doing and it chose the most uncomfortable way to drop the mike and leave the stage. Lund’s always suffered for being the audience surrogate, putting the story above her family or her career, but that plot-driving commitment has finally ruined her as corruption closes ranks and nothing ever changes. The show’s last hour pushes the audience – and by this I mean me – to want Sarah Lund to do just one damn thing.

What grounds it is, well, Sarah Lund herself the series does a good job of showing how deeply messed up her family life is (with her estranged son not wanting to talk to her and not even wanting to start a family for fear he’ll be as bad at it as she was)… and finally delivering its brutal ending.
Forbrydelsen has always essentially been a grab bag of narrative tricks, stringing the audience along its bread crumb trail of twists and misdirections, and it’s in danger of feeling a bit hoary and empty in the final stretch. We’ve another set of politicians and another family and, of course, more Killing, but I know that clues will lead to other clues that will be obstructed and that the political class will close ranks and Sarah Lund’s tireless crusade for the Truth will come at enormous costs. Somewhere in the third and final season of Forbrydelsen – which I’ve now finished – it all gets a bit samey. As always spoilers in relevant paragraphs.įorbrydelsen.
